A technical and safety inspection of a ship is a systematic assessment of the vessel, its structural integrity, equipment, onboard systems and documentation, carried out by competent authorities and/or authorized organizations to verify compliance with applicable national and international legislation.

The scope of an inspection typically includes:

• Technical assessment – inspection of the ship's hull structure, machinery, onboard equipment, electrical and communication systems, cargo handling equipment and, where applicable, systems and equipment used for the transport and care of live animals.

• Safety assessment – verification of compliance with applicable requirements relating to maritime safety (SOLAS), pollution prevention (MARPOL), fire protection, life-saving appliances, occupational health and hygiene standards, and the certification and competency of the ship's crew.

• Documentation review – verification of the validity and completeness of statutory certificates, ship's records, stability documentation, certificates of compliance and any other documents required by applicable national or international regulations.

• Risk assessment – identification and evaluation of deficiencies, observations and other conditions that may affect the safety of the vessel, its crew, passengers, live animals, cargo or the marine environment during maritime operations.
